Police say a man in his 40s has died in hospital after collision between two vehicles.

A man has died after a collision between two vehicles at Heathrow airport.

Police were called to the airport at 6am on Wednesday after the vehicles crashed on the taxiway.

The man, a British Airways engineer, in his 40s suffered serious injuries and was taken to a west London hospital where he later died. His next of kin have been informed but formal identification has yet to take place, the Metropolitan police said. Another man is believed to have suffered a broken shoulder.

The Met said it was investigating the incident but no arrests had been made. The Health and Safety Executive has also been informed.

An airport spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that following a serious accident involving two vehicles on our airfield, an airport colleague has passed away. Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends affected by this accident. We will be fully cooperating with the police in the investigation which will follow.”

A BA spokeswoman said: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and are offering our full care and support to his family and colleagues.”

Several aircraft preparing to take off were held on the ground after the collision near Terminal 5. At least 20 British Airways flights failed to meet their scheduled departure time after the crash.

The spokeswoman said: “We have apologised to customers for the delay to a small number of our flights this morning, following an incident involving two operational vehicles at the airport. We are doing all we can to ensure they will be able to depart as soon as possible.”
