According to the Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Ing. Simon Allotey, during the 74th ICAO day celebration at GATA, Ghana “may soon introduce a cut-off age for aircrafts at the time of initial registration” for an Aircraft Operating Certificate (AOC).

This decision came about after the passing of the Capetown Convention, “which gives leverage to acquire newer fleets” because the “newer the aircraft, the fewer problems you generally have”

At the moment, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority does not have a cut-off age for aircrafts during a company’s initial registration process for the AOC. He stated that, it was not mandatory by the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) to look at the years of an aircraft “so long as we examine and realise that it is airworthy, we register it”.

He went further to assure the Ghanaian public, that “the fact that the aircraft is ten fifteen years old, does not mean it is not safe”. The aircraft goes through A,B, and C checks. “C being the rigorous from time to time” and sometimes “some of the tests are not even performed in Ghana, they go to their aircraft maintenace base”.

“Working together to ensure no country is left behind”. This is the theme for this years’ International Civil Aviation Day.

The International Civil Aviation Day is celebrated on the 7th of December every year since its inception in 1994 during ICAO’s 50th-anniversary activities.

Ghana Civil Aviation Authority celebrated the 74th ICAO day on the 6th of December since the 7th of December, was a farmers day celebration in Ghana.

The Guest of Honour for the occasion was Her Ladyship, Sophia Akufo. Also, the Aviation Ministry represented in grand style by having the Aviation Minister, Joseph Kofi Adda, his Deputy, Kwabena Okyere-Darko Mensah, the Acting Chief Director and others at the event. Past Director Generals of Ghana Civil Aviation Authority were present as well.

“The purpose of the day was to recognize the importance of aviation, especially international air travel, to the social and economic development of the world”. (Wikipedia)

According to ICAO, “the importance of aviation as an engine of global connectivity has never been more relevant to the Chicago Convention’s objective to look to international flight as a fundamental enabler of global peace and prosperity”.
