A Ugandan flight instructor and his student have died in a plane crash in the United States of America.
Sydney Miti, 31, a resident of Waltham was instructing Lattermann, 18, of Dover before their four-seater plane, a Cessna 172 crashed.
“I can’t imagine what could have happened. He told me, honey, it’s going to be a good day,” Ms Doryeen Nyaketcho, Miti’s wife, said.
A page has been set at gofundme to mobilise $15,000 needed to bring his body back to Uganda for burial. By press time on Monday, $612 had been collected.
Ms Freda Ssebalu, a resident of Boston and a close family friend said Miti was a loving and friendly man who will be missed by all.
“We had two people on board – both fatalities. There was no fire. The foam is used to suppress vapours so we can work. We needed to extricate the two victims, which we have done,” Mansfield Fire Chief, Mr Neal Boldrighini told local media in Boston.
Mr Neal said that the accident occurred at about 12.30PM on Saturday, adding that the plane’s radio transmission indicated a missed approach.
“Moments later, the Cessna 172 flew past the Municipal Airport Administration Building and crashed into the turf landing area. I thought it was like a little skid off the runway or something, but it was nothing like that. It looks like it came right out of the sky,” he said.
The ill-fated plane, which the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said took off from Norwood Memorial Airport, was owned by Horizon Aviation of Norwood, a flight training school in Boston which employed Miti.
“The FAA will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause of the accident,” the FAA said in a statement.
Miti’s mother, Ms Gertrude Miti said: “The family is devastated and in complete disbelief to share that Sydney Miti passed on in a plane crash tragic accident on Saturday at the Mansfield Municipal Airport. He was an amazing husband, father, brother, son, nephew, uncle and friend loved by all.”
Miti is survived by a two-year-old child and a widow.
