Breast Cancer is no Respecter of Age, early detection can save lives

Breast cancer does not respect age because it affects both young and old. This statement came about when the Women in Aviation – Ghana Chapter in partnership with Delta Airlines, Ghana and Breast Care International organized a breast cancer awareness seminar and screening on the 21st October, 2021 to commemorate the breast cancer month of October at the Kotoka International Airport, Terminal Two.

According to the President of Breast Care International, Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, breast cancer can affect both young and old women and early detection of it can save lives, “we have hope that when we diagnose the disease early, we can preserve the breast for the woman and we can also save the life of the woman just because we found it early”- Dr. Wiafe Addai said.

She encouraged the women in aviation to self test and also go for screening every month especially after their menstrual cycle to rule out any issues with the breast. She advised that immediately a lump is detected in the breast, they should consult a doctor for further tests to be done.

The station manager of Delta Airlines for Ghana and Dakar, Mr. Sidoine X. Rodrigues reiterated the fact that “catching breast cancer early is the key to a cure” and advised the audience to take advantage of the program to get screened. He said the airline has supported Breast Care International for five years to help “women and men who wouldn’t otherwise have access to screening programs and seek treatment” to do so.

Irene Adorkor Sowah, a breast cancer survivor, shared her inspiring story on how she detected a lump in her breast through self examination and the her from discovery to counseling, chemotherapy and her several surgeries to survive breast cancer. She encouraged all women to take the bold step to get screened and seek medical help if something is detected.

To crown the event, the President for Women in Aviation -Ghana Chapter, Mrs Juliet Wiafe encouraged the women to take care of their breast because it gives “pleasure to women and their men as well”.
