Africa World Airlines commended the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority for the launch of the new consumer protection directives that provided domestic and international airline passengers in Ghana with statutory remedies in case of denied boarding, flight delays or flight cancellations.
According to the airlines reliability rate for the month of june 2019, they operated 1,326 flights, 2 delayed beyond 2hrs, 51,782 passengers were booked, 2 passengers were denied boarding and the had 98.79% schedule reliability.
The consumer protection directives was lauched by the Minister of Aviation, Joseph Kofi Adda, during the IATA regional forum which took place in Accra on the 24th to 25th June 2019. This document deals with passengers rights and air operator’s obligations to passengers. It sets out types of compensations for overbooking and denied boarding, delays and cancellations of flights. Also, there is an instruction in the document regarding the handling of persons with disability.
For instance, if a passenger is denied boarding against his will due to overbooking of a flight, the airline must reimburse him/her within seven days of the full cost of the ticket or re-route him/her to their final destination at the earliest opportunity or at a later date at the passenger’s convenience.
