A bomb allegedly went off at the Kotoka International Airport on Tuesday, 28th December, 2021 from an unidentified and unattended bag.
Following a video going viral on social media by one Mimi, it shows a scene at the arrival hall of the airport with a sound like a gunshot or fire cracker going off leaving passengers scrambling to lie on the ground.
Another eye witness shared his experience of what happened at the airport:
“My experience at the airport Kotoka. I just got back and there is a bomb at Kotoka Airport. But here is my experience. We fly Air Cote d’Ivoire due to Emirates cancellations. We get to Kotoka. My mom and I take the Covid test. We get to customs. Awaiting COVID test results. Security alerts us that we should move to another side. They hurdle us to one side. My mom is alerted that there is a bomb at Kotoka. And the bomb was at the VIP lounge. And that there was a bomb where security told us to sit and wait. She was alerted that they had sent people to designated the bomb. The bomb had been there since this Morning. We heard gun shots so my mom and I run outside with our luggage and the driver was awaiting us. But we are safe. Thank God. The bomb has still not been designated. I am not sure why security did not evacuate us from the building. But whew it has been an adventure” – the report states.
From other sources, there was an unidentified and unattended luggage that was left for quite a while. Following airport protocols the dog and bomb squad were brought in to intervene. The team controlled an explosion that came from the unattended bag. No casualties have been reported yet.
Emirates Airlines is extending the suspension of flights departing Accra till indefinitely. An urgent broadcast sited by GH-Aviation states that, "Emirates flight suspension from Accra to Dubai (EK 788) effective 27th December, 2021 is now extended until further notice."
